HIGHLAND VIEW COTTAGE is a self-catering holiday cottage based in the Outdoor capital of the UK, Fort William. It is an ideal place to base yourself for a week or two, whilst touring the highlands and islands of Scotland.
Some of the villages and towns worth visiting and not too far away are my favourites
Firstly there’s....Fort Augustus
This is a lovely village just 40 minutes drive from Fort William and it is situated right at the beginning of Loch Ness. Here you can go out Nessie watching on a charter boat or you can relax and watch all the luxury yachts going through the amazing lock system, taking these boats from Loch Ness on to the Caledonian Canal.
Drumnadrochit
This is also a lovely village about 15 minutes further on and although not right on the loch, it seems to be classed as the official “Loch Ness Monster” village with a museum etc. dedicated to our Nessie. Oh look out for American scientists with their sonar equipment out searching in the loch, looking for our wee Nessie - but she’s probably in bed sleeping!
ISLE of Skye
I must say most people visiting Fort William usually go on to Isle of Skye, some drive to Mallaig and then take the ferry across (this is the shortest route) and some drive all the way stopping off just before the Kyle Of Lochalsh to visit the famous “Eileen Donan” castle, then on and over this massive bridge into Skye itself.
A bit nearer to home we can go over to...
AVIEMORE
This famous ski resort is probably just about 90 minutes or so away if you drive and is really Scotland’s most famous ski resort.
And even nearer we have...
SPEAN BRIDGE
The famous commando memorial is here and further down this single track road you will find “Loch Arkaig”. Bonnie Prince Charlie’s gold is meant to be hidden around here somewhere. Anyway I didn’t find any.
If you like like to see the Salmon Leap out of the water and up over the waterfalls, just go to the next village of Roy Bridge. Here you can visit the Monessie Falls.
Lets go back south of Fort William and head to...
ARDNAMURCHAN / SOUND OF ARISAIG
This is a difficult one to explain to you but the journey is worth it. Cross the Corran ferry and Travel towards Ardnamurchan on the A861 stop at Acharacle (pronounced Aharacle) for a cup of tea then keep on the A861 road and keep stopping from Ardmolich To Glenuig looking out to sea, the views are breathtaking.
Looking down to south left is Isle of Coll then in the middle is the Isle of Muck.
Then at 11 o clock there’s the Isle of Eigg and at the top is Skye.
GLENCOE
Just a short run from Fort William, this little village is well worth a visit with lots of history here, I can tell you. Here you will find the memorial dedicated to the people that died as a result of the Macdonald clan’s massacre in 1691 www.macdonald.com
And a bit further down the road there’s the famous Glencoe Ski resort. Need I say more!
All the above Highland villages with lots of Scottish history are all worth a visit and they are all accessible from the self-catering Highland View Cottage based in Fort William. The outdoor capital of the UK.
