If it’s adventure your after then look no further.
Thrills for all! From mountain biking to Munro bagging, Ice climbing to kayaking and Quad biking to horse riding.
When writing about what to do in Fort William its difficult to know where to start, so I will just put all these activities, as I can think of them in no particular order!
With one exception Scotland’s largest mountain…. “Ben Nevis”The Ben, as its affectionately known stands at 4,406 ft and attracts visitors from all over the UK and beyond. Many just want to come and look. But many come for the challenge, to climb and to conquer! Oh and you do not have to climb the north face, you can take the easy way up, there’s a defined pathway up to the top, although steep it’s not impossible and… no ropes required, just good boots and waterproofs!
Walking
Walking is what Fort William is all about and there are walks everywhere some easy, some a challenge, some just stunning. Take the walk from Highland View cottage for instance, right out of the door and over the pathway leading to Glen Nevis with magnificent views of “The Ben” on the way, then down a steep pathway and into the Glen and over to the lower falls then walk up the river-side and to the upper falls eventually coming to the steel rope bridge “Dare you to cross”, its an all day adventure folks.
Cycling
Cycling especially mountain biking is the big thing here in Fort William with the world championship mountain bike world cup challenge held here every summer.
See www.fortwilliamworldcup.co.uk. This takes place at the Nevis range and I have seen it and I can tell you its dangerous. Well to me it is!
Fort William had a brand new cycle path laid last year and I must say it is very good and starts in Fort William and takes you all the way up to the “Great Glen way”.
And what better place to cycle than the road from Fort William to Inverness 66 miles at the side of “The Great Glen Way” with breathtaking scenery.
Ski-ing
The Nevis Range boasts Scotland’s highest ski resort, sitting alongside Ben Nevis, and in the ski-ing months December to April, The Nevis Range offers the best in skiing and snowboarding and boasts to have over 25 runs and the big one for the enthusiast, “The Back Corrie”, an off piste experience with cornices, drop off’s and ridges to explore.
Ice climbing
Although outside Fort William I cannot not mention “The Ice Factor” based in Kinlochleven, its an indoor rock climbing centre. Its just a short drive and actually has ice climbing courses with a real wall of ice boasting to be the highest in the UK, so you can go there and do some indoor rock and ice climbing. Amazing ! www.ice-factor.co.uk
Golf
Did I mention golf !
Yes Fort William has its very own 18-hole golf course sat just at the bottom of Ben Nevis. In this 6,217-yard course you can experience golf in breathtaking scenery and you may think its all uphill but its not, its quite a level course and a challenge!
Back at the Clubhouse very friendly staff and members will also greet you off the club. The course also plays 5,464 off the yellows.
Ps, shh keep quiet don’t tell anyone but..(I can get you half price golf) if you are staying at the Highland View self catering cottage. www.fortwilliamgolf.co.uk
Jacobite steam train
Now this is just a pleasure trip “THE JACOBITE STEAM TRAIN” operates from Fort William and travels to Mallaig every day, Monday to Friday from May to October and Saturday/Sunday from June to August.
Whether your a steam train enthusiast or a Harry Potter fan or you just want to see the most beautiful scenery from the steam train, then this is for you. Oh and the Glenfinnan viaduct is amazing. See www.steamtrain.info
